Surfboard Making Courses
COURSE PRICE $2,795 per person
The Make Your Own Board Course is available for up to four people at The Surfboard Studio in Preston. The course runs over two days, and we can currently offer classes on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. (Days may be negotiable and will depend on shaper availability - just ask!)
We supply our students with all the equipment, materials, skilled instruction & expert guidance to create their own surf craft from start to finish – ready to hit the water. You are provided with the knowledge and practical experience to then go on and build additional surfboards on your own. With the guidance of our expert instructors, you will leave the Surfboard Studio with your own beautifully finished surfboard – first time.
COURSE INFORMATION
Our courses run over 2 days - 2 x 8 hour sessions.
Participants must attend 2 sessions to complete their surfboard.
Day One begins with the basics of surfboard design. You will be familiarised with the shaping bay and all the tools and techniques of the craft. Then we will take you deeper into the intricacies of shaping and design including planning shapes, bottom contours (concaves, vee etc), nose and tail, rocker lines, deck shapes and rail shapes. We will discuss fin and plug installation, including various theories around fin positioning on different boards, and how their placement may affect performance.
Day Two of the course will proceed into the glassing stage where you will learn about the various techniques and materials used in glassing a surfboard. Optional extras like adding logos and colours to your resin are done at this stage, before cutting your own cloth, mixing your resin and laminating your board. You will then move on to sanding and pro-finishing, and you'll be ready to get in the water!

Please provide us with some suggested dates, and provide as much information as possible as to the type of board you want to build. We will get back to you ASAP to discuss your booking. Once a booking is accepted, we require full payment.
Please note that courses are operated in Preston which is 10km from the CBD of Melbourne, Victoria. We don't offer courses on public holidays or during the months of December/January.
Bookings are to be made for at least a minimum of two weeks ahead, so that we can arrange and prepare a blank for you.
OPTIONAL EXTRAS

The course fee covers a shaped and glassed, plain white board up to 6'8" with Thruster fin setup (FCSII or Futures). Optional extras include resin-tint, logos or additional fin setup, and if you want to build a board over 6'8", just nominate what size you want in the booking page. Other optional extras can be decided once the course has commenced, and can be paid for on completion of the course.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILES
In the course you are supervised through each stage of construction by an expert while you build a surfboard from start to finish and you come out with your own board, finished and ready to surf.

ACCOMODATION OPTIONS
For those of you who want to travel in to Melbourne to do this course from further afield, we can recommend some local accommodation choices for you. One of the closest hotels with a range of different price options is the Novotel Melbourne Preston Hotel or the Punthill Apartments Ivanhoe, which are both five minutes drive away.
CONDITIONS
* Due to limited spaces and high demand, all bookings are final and cannot be refunded. Changes to dates of bookings will be considered only at our discretion, and may attract a $250.00 administration fee for re-booking courses. If you wish to discuss this, you must email info@thesurfboardstudio.com.au with “Change of Booking” in the subject line at least 30 days before your course is due to commence.
