What is the difference between sandpaper and a gauze shaping screen?

Sandpaper provides a continuous abrasive surface and can be used by hand or with a suitable block. Gauze screen is open and flexible, which helps it follow foam rails and contours while allowing dust to pass through.

Which grit should I start with?

Use the least aggressive grit that removes the required material. Coarse grits are useful for shaping or levelling, while finer grits reduce scratches and prepare the surface for finishing.

Can I use wet-and-dry sheets for shaping foam?

They are primarily useful for smoother cured-resin, repair and gloss-finishing stages in this range. For foam shaping, use an abrasive and backing method designed for controlled shaping.

Should I skip directly from a coarse grit to a very fine grit?

Large jumps can leave deep scratches visible. Progress through suitable intermediate stages and inspect the surface before moving finer.

When should an abrasive be replaced?

Replace it when it is clogged, torn, contaminated or cutting unevenly. A worn sheet or screen can slow the work and make the finish inconsistent.
