Which tools are useful for a first hand-shaped surfboard?

A practical starting set usually includes a template or template material, a layout square, measuring calipers, a scribe or rail marker, a suitable surform and abrasives. Add contour and fin-layout tools to suit the board you plan to build.

What is the difference between a surform and a shaping screen?

A surform cuts foam and is useful for outline, foil and contour work. A flexible shaping screen or sandpaper removes smaller marks and refines curves after the heavier cutting stage.

What does a template marker do?

A template marker follows an existing rail curve and transfers it to suitable template material. It helps create a repeatable outline reference before the blank is cut.

Are the fin jigs and router bits interchangeable?

No. Fin-installation tools are system-specific. Match the jig, template guide and router bit to the exact FCS, Futures or other box system before routing the blank.

Should I buy the shaping tool kit or individual tools?
